Milton seems, for many people, to be the perfect combination of city and country living.
It is a great city to live in today and with a current estimated population of around 98,500 as of 2008 and is expected to almost double by the year 2021. Milton received a huge amount of publicity in 2006 following the release of the results of the census that year, which indicated that Milton was the fastest growing community in all of Canada, with a 71% increase in population between 2001 and 2006.
It all started in 1821 when a man named Jasper Martin from Newcastle England decided to build a grist mill on his grant of Crown land. The mill was located along the banks of the sixteen mile creek and was powered by building a large man-made pond.
This mill was the beginning of a small community which consisted of approximately 60 people named "Martin's Mills"
By 1837, with the addition of some new commercial developments such as an ashery, a post office, and a small store the town had grown to just over 100 people. A town meeting was held to discuss the renaming of the town. The townspeople suggested "Milton" after and English poet named John Milton, who wrote a memorable poem, Paradise Lost.
And so it was decided; Milton would be the new name for this growing little town.
Today Milton, host all the modern conveniences of the city while upholding the
charm and feeling of the country.
The majority of the homes in Milton today were built over the past 7-10yrs by a plethora of builders including, Greenpark, Falconcrest, Tiffany Park, Fieldgate, Arista and the most prominent being Mattamy.
Hawthorne village, which is one of the most well known communites in Milton, was built primarily by Mattamy homes. Hawthorne village won "project of the year" by the Canadian Home Builders Association and also "community of the year" by the Greater Toronto Homebuilders Association. This has been one of the many factors making Milton a desirable location for those looking to move out of the city.
Milton also, offers a phenomenal school system offering everything including Catholic and French immersion programs at all levels of education. For more info on Milton schools click here.
Another significant factor affecting Milton's growth is the town tax rate is substantially lower than surrounding areas. The tax rate is approximately .91% of the assesd value of your home. Just another reason people are moving to Milton.
